From The Reporter's Notebook

Last week TPM reporter Catherine Thompson caught up with the Arizona State University professor who ticked off both conservative media and white supremacist groups last spring with his "problem of whiteness" course. Lee Bebout said the backlash taught him a lot about the "interconnectedness" of news outlets like Campus Reform and Fox News and white supremacist groups. "In some ways they're using really similar rhetoric, and it's the rhetoric or the discourse of white victimhood or a war on whites," he said. He plans to offer the class again in the spring.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: "I have long felt that [Bill Maher] is the greatest political commentator of our time. Even as many people praised Jon Stewart, I thought that the Comedy Central format of "fake news," while great, never rose to Maher's level of directly taking on the divisive politics of our day head on in his various talk shows over the years (now called "Real Time" and appearing on HBO). He goes after anyone who is a bad actor, and mercilessly so (as they deserve). His format of bringing in conservatives, liberals, and actors/celebrities to debate the issues is unique and he manages it well, skewering Democrats if they err, and agreeing with Republicans if they make a good point (which is not often). His is the only show which can regularly get ultra-conservatives on (recently Rick Santorum and Grover Norquist for example) to talk about real issues without letting them do their usual distractions and evasions. An excellent and rare contributor to our political discourse."
